{Food Fix} Baja Fresh Mexican Grill

I love me some Mexican food but I also know how damaging it could be to the waist line.  So a couple weeks ago, the Hubs and I decided to try Baja Fresh, for a healthier twist on Mexican.

I didn't really know what to expect of the food or the restaurant, just that they are supposed to be healthier than your average fast food taco joint.  But I have definitely been lured in to other restaurants by the pull of "nutritious" sounding words, like "fresh", "natural", and "grilled" before, only to find platters full of junk disguised as healthy food. So, I was prepared to be disappointed.
 But I wasn't.
I was actually surprised when I stepped inside and looked around.
Check out the signs above the registers.
"No Microwaves"  "No Can Openers"  "No Freezers"  "No Lard"

Wow.

This place might actually be legit.

There were also fresh made salsas, not packaged in little plastic pouches.
Dare I say, environmentally friendly?

Chips and Salsa.

I ordered the
Fire Grilled Chicken Skinny Bowl.
Achiote marinated fire-grilled all white meat chicken, vegetarian black beans, green chile-tomatillo rice, squash & achiote onions topped with our fresh Tomatillo Salsa Fresca.

It was pretty delish.  I could really taste the fire grill flavor on the chicken and the tomatillo salsa fresca was the perfect compliment to the warm rice.
The portion was big, so I saved some for later in the day, which I don't mind.  I prefer to get my money's worth rather than pay regular price for a rinky dink portion.
Speaking of price, I think the bowl was around $6, which isn't too bad.

Overall, I have to say, I was impressed.

Mr. A, wasn't feeling the Fresh Mex at Baja Fresh, so the Hubs took him across the street for a burger at Wendy's,

while Wynnie and I had a mini photo shoot in the parking lot.
Have you ever tried Baja Fresh? What's your take?

  1. baja fresh is good, i love their bean burritos. their black beans and pinto beans are really good. and they black salsa is one of the best ive ever had. however they are not low on the calorie side, and their sodium levels are incredible high. you can look up all the nurtitional information on google. i checked the bean burrito before and it was right around 700 calories which is pretty high. its good for an occasional thing to

  2. To decrease calories at Baja Fresh, you can have any burrito in a bowl ("Bare Style) which eliminates the tortilla resulting is 350 less calories. That 50% of the calories and Bare Style is the way to go for healthy eating. Any item can be customized. If you don't want any sauce that can increase the calories intake, ask for it to be removed. The healthy items available at Baja Fresh are usuallly a lot more than their competitors.
